Welcome to Bluebonnet Barbet. We are a small Barbet fancier in the beautiful, piney woods of Huntsville, Texas. We have been active in the lives of our dogs since 1985, beginning with Boxers and moving to the Barbet in 2012,. Our love of Barbet began with Wookie Biscay's Grand Opal, (Maizie) who was bred by Biscay Water Dogs in Ontario, Canada. Our most important goal is to produce structurally sound, healthy puppies that are emotionally stable and that will bring years of joy and love to their families.
We are active members of the AKC, UKC, and our local club, the Conroe Kennel Club. We are a recognized breeder with the Barbet Club of America.
AKC Standard -"Temperament: The Barbet is a responsive, loving member of the family. Joyful, bright, and kindly natured, he is a versatile sporting dog and willing participant in many activities. The sensitive Barbet responds to positive interaction and training, and displays an even temperament." We are proud to produce puppies that exemplify the AKC Standard. The delight of the Barbet is that they are so constant in their temperament. Their vivaciousness and joyfulness do not waver.
Conscientious breeders know that good puppies don't just happen. They are planned. Our Barbet are health tested. and structurally evaluated.. We look at the physical attributes, temperament and personalities of the parents when planning a litter. We feed a raw diet to our dogs and provide plenty of exercise on our 3 acres. Puppies are fed a high quality kibble, but are introduced to a raw diet. They are well socialized and have engaging and stimulating activities and toys, with plenty of room to run and play.
Please contact us with any questions and we are very happy to help you.
We know of Barbet in many cities in the US and if we don't, we can ask our Barbet breeder friends. The majority of Barbet owners are more than happy to meet with you and share their dog with you. If you live close by, we are happy to set up a meeting!
Barbet are joyful, cheerful dogs who want to be with their owners as much as possible. They are intelligent, love learning and are inquisitive. If you're doing something, you can expect your Barbet to be watching you with interest. Because they love to be with you, it is best if your living situation allows you to be with them a lot of the time. If you are able to give time throughout the day to your Barbet, then you will have a happy, content dog.
We recommend that you put a deposit down. We can't guarantee there will be a puppy available, unless you have secured a spot.
We are better able to plan our litters when we know that we have approved homes for them for ready to go. Please don't put your name on more than one list. Every breeder is planning their litters based on communication with families who want a puppy. When someone backs out at the last minute, it can take weeks, or even more. to find a new home for a puppy.
Barbet are brown, black, blond or pied.
This is a question we get asked a lot! Barbet are like people - they have their own preferences. While they do have webbed feet and their "job" is to swim in cold water to retrieve water fowl, they don't all enjoy the water. If you have a pool or water nearby, we recommend a slow and gentle approach to acclimate your puppy to the water. Try to get your puppy in the water as soon as possible with gentle coaxing and by making it a fun activity.
Barbet have hair, not fur. It grows constantly, just like human hair. Some owners find that they are able to keep their dog brushed out and groom them themnseles, but many take their dog to a groomer every 6-8 weeks. How often your dog needs to see a groomer depends on how well you've kept the coat rushed out. Some Barbet have thick, curly hair and some have loose, wavy curls, There are a variety of coats. You will need to brush/comb frequently whether you use a groomer or not. We will discuss grooming in depth with you, including tools, technique, and trouble shooting.
Barbet are sensitive, intelligent dogs. They learn quickly and like a challenge. If you have a gentle, positive approach to training you will be pleased with your dog's progress. Barbet do not respond well to negative training methods or harsh words. Be gentle, kind and consistent. From the beginning, expose your puppy to lots of noises (vacuming, lawn mowers, street sounds, construction, etc.). Consistently introduce your puppy to new people, other dogs and animals. This will contribute towards having an out going and gregarious dog. Many of our puppy families choose to go with a professional dog trainer, while others are experienced and comfortable with they're already doing.

Wookie Biscay's Grand Opal, UKC CH, Canine Good Citizen
"Maizie"
Maizie was born October 20, 2012 and came to our family in 2013 from Biscay Water Dogs n Ontario, Canada. She is the matriarch of our dogs at 10 years old. Maizie has brought so much joy to our lives over the years. She enjoys swimming, as long as there are humans to swim with and hanging out. Although retired from having own puppies Maizie loves to be in the middle of another mom's litter. Maizie enjoyed being in the show ring and has a beautiful stride.
Nelum-Himalis Francesca
"Hazel"
Hazel was born August 11, 2013 and came to us from the Nelum-Himalis kennel in Finland. After making the long journey from Finland to NYC to Houston, Hazel bounded cheerfully out of the crate and unfazed by the trip. Hazel is a devoted, sweet girl who is speedy fast! In her prime, she could outmaneuver any dog, darting between trees and jumping over tree limbs. It was such fun to see her leading several dogs around the yard, trying to catch up to her. Hazel loves to hunt squirrels and is the first out of the door! Hazel loved raising her puppies and the puppies of the other girls as well! She is now retired.
Bluebonnet's Delilah, UKC CH
Delilah was born October 23, 2016 and is a big, goofy jumble of love and affection. From the very beginning, her goofiness and silliness made her a standout from the others. She wants our undivided attention every minute and doesn't hesitate to demand it by nudging our hands with her nose. Delilah is a pleasure to watch in the show ring, because she so thoroughly enjoys the experience. Delilah is one of Maizie's pups and was kept for our own breeding.
Bluebonnet's Daphne
Daphne was born November 19, 2020. Daphne resembles Delilah and has a beautiful presence and stride. She is a vivacious, pretty girl and we are looking forward to showing her in AKC Conformation.
Bluebonnet's Lacey Go-Go
"Go-Go'
Gogo was born June 18, 2021 and was named for her one, cute, little, white paw, that resembles a gogo boot. She is full of energy, wriggling around for attention and sweet as she can be. Gogo has begun participating in conformation events, and we are looking forward to showing her in the future.
Bluebonnet's Wild West Junie
"Junie"
Junie's mother is Hazel and Junie has many of the speedy, dodgy attributes of her mother. She loves nothing more than to lead the other dogs on a. merry chase through the trees and across the wood piles. She was born February 13, 2022 and will begin entering AKC Conformation in the next year.
Bluebonnet's Wild West Jessie
"Jessie"
Jessie is Junie's sister and while enjoying a good chase, she also is attentive to us and seeks to please. She frequently makes eye contact as if to say, "What can I do for you?"
